Concept

If you have seen Minority Report you’ve seen the future of Retail TV but how do we get there?

The first step is to get away from the crummy video loop systems of the past and move towards a digital platform with centralised distribution, control and monitoring.

We envisage a system based on industry standard hardware, software and networking components allowing the retailer to focus their budgets on developing content rather than the technology.

Our Retail TV concept consists of a centralised media library which is then distributed to the local stores for local playback. At the local store the media would be displayed on intelligent display screens hung from the ceiling at various key locations.

The local store manager may be able to override the store’s media plan to emphasize key product lines. All the intelligent displays will keep detailed audit logs recording media playback and optionally recording snapshots of the display audience.

The audit logs are correlated within the store and then sent to the central Retail TV management system.

Technology

All the components required to develop this solution are available today on the Microsoft Windows platform.

The centralised Retail TV Management System will be constructed as an industry standard web application using Web Services technology to communicate with the local stores.

Media creation, management and distribution will be handled using the Windows Media platform which is an integral part of the Microsoft Windows platform.

Communications to the local stores can be routed over an existing IP network or a dedicated broadband (or satellite) connection. Distribution to the intelligent display systems within the store will be over wireless networking protocols (WiFi) avoiding the requirement to run network cables around the store.

We anticipate using either Windows Tablet PCs or Windows based laptops running custom .NET software to provide the intelligent display technology including webcam technology to watch the audience.
